SouthCoastToday.com reports that the city of New Bedford is over its state-imposed limit of all-alcohol licenses by 23.  The immediate unavailability of a liquor licenses can be an obstacle in opening or expanding your establishment.

Urban Grille at 774 Purchase St. has been looking for a license and is currently operating as a bring-your-own establishment. Owner Mariano Pinho said he would like to have a liquor license to enhance the business but said he cannot afford to buy one privately.   “I’d even be happy with a beer and wine license but it’s very tough to get,” he said. “I think in some cases (a liquor license) is important for the success of the establishment.”

The article does not state if New Bedford will seek to increase it’s allotment of all-alcohol licenses by way of a home-rule petition to the state legislature as several other Massachusetts cities and towns have done recently.
