WGBH News reports on a Boston man’s invention of a straws and cups that are able to detect date-rape drugs in drinks.  Currently working out of the MassChallenge office space in Boston’s Innovation District, Michael Abramson’s idea, now a company called DrinkSavvy, came after he was out at a club one night and had someone slip something in his drink.  DrinkSavvy works by a color detection system.

Red stripes on the straws and cups would indicate the drink has been contaminated. It’s an idea Abramson has turned into a business, under the name DrinkSavvy. He’s working with two professors at his alma mater, Worcester Polytechnic Institute, to develop his first line of plastic straws and cups. He’s also working on glassware.

Abramson has already raised $52,000 for the company through an online fundraising campaign and he is aiming to have the straws and cups ready by this September.  He plans to market them to bars, restaurants, and college campuses.

Would you use these cups and straws in your club, bar, or restaurant?
